DIGITAL PEACE NOW ENDORSES THE PARIS CALL
On September 21, 2021, the 40th anniversary of the International Day of Peace, Digital Peace Now officially endorsed The Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace. As a global movement dedicated to protecting our digital world, the endorsement of The Paris Call affirms our commitment to keeping the Internet a safe place for connection, opportunity, and inspiration.
Spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron, The Paris Call brings together nation-states, local governments, private companies, and civil society organizations to promote a peaceful cyberspace for all. The international agreement is based on nine principles designed to keep our Internet safe, such as to curb state-sponsored cyberattacks, enhance cybersecurity protocols, and establish global cyber norms. With over 1,200 supporters worldwide, The Paris Call is the world’s largest cybersecurity multi-stakeholder commitment to date.
However, three years after the launch of The Paris Call, many nation-states, including the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa, have failed to endorse the initiative. Without their support, it presents a powerful signal that protecting our digital world is not a priority.
That is why we are also launching a new action campaign to promote the Paris Call’s ever-critical mission of digital peace and call on global democracies to #PickUpTheParisCall. For our #PickUpTheParisCall campaign, we will work with youth advocacy, human rights, and peacebuilding organizations to bring attention to the Paris Call’s commitment to working together to adopt responsible cyberspace behavior. Leading up to the anniversary of the Paris Call in November, we will host and participate in online events that raise awareness of cyberwarfare and urge others to endorse the agreement.
As we face the ever-growing threat of cyberwarfare, we need a unified front to take on the challenges ahead. We hope you will join our effort to stop the weaponization of the Internet by supporting The Paris Call today.
